A Budget Traveler In A Top End Resort
As a budget traveler, I am usually not a big fan of top end resorts. They eat your wallet like whales eat plankton and the experience is almost always the same. But I understand why some people like to go here.
If you are a big fan of resorts, I hope you can find some inspiration on how to better plan your stay and make it a little more adventurous (in a safe way, cause I know how resorts are all about safety). If you are not, than maybe you can find some more grudges in this article, or offer you a new insight as to why you don’t really need a resort to have an awesome holiday.
In my life I had the opportunity to stay in a top end resort twice. Once during Christmas in Thailand when some family and friends decided to go to Phuket and once when I was persuaded by friends to go to Antalya in Turkey.
My friends will agree with me on this; I always talk about how I loath these resorts… But in my defense, I had great experiences as well! In the end, it is all about the decisions you make before and during your stay. Here is what I did right and what I did wrong:
The Right Decisions - Thailand

Location, location location! I had a great resort in Thailand on a great location. When we left our resort it was extremely easy to get a tuk tuk and market stalls were everywhere! This meant for me that even though I had the luxury of staying in a resort, I could still mingle with the locals and visit the attractions that define Phuket.

I AM A KING! That is basically a phrase I could say there. You can easily spend more money than necessary by not haggling with market stalls, visit expensive sushi restaurants and of course, stay in a luxurious resort. Why? Because you go with the flow. You are living a luxurious lifestyle and you want to show it. I am really thankful that my family helped me around during my stay, but of course, the budget traveler in me did not feel at ease.

Dutch Beesies!
World Cup Final 2010! Holland vs. Spain. Amazing football match and I am still heartbroken by the outcome (well actually I’m devastated and depressed). But the experience I had in Turkey was crazy.
The resort was filled with Dutch, as were the surrounding resorts. We occasionally would step on our orange-decorated balcony and stand in front of our national flag with a Vuvuzela. Here we were screaming and singing to a resort on the other side where people would join our party! Before we knew it, in both resorts, balconies were filled with Dutchmen, Germans and other football fanatics all cheering for their country (unfortunately I didn’t see any Spanish tourists).

I went all-inclusive… This is probably the biggest mistake of my life as I had to eat the food made on the resort. And this food, is terrible, mass produced, garbage! With the exception of the hamburgers (hamburgers in Turkey…) my stomach couldn’t enjoy itself. As of this day I don’t know what Turkish local food is about and I have never tasted it… This is probably my biggest travel regret! Oh, and you know how people say that every day the food is different on a resort? Well, I didn’t notice…
The Right Decisions – Both
Fish spa's are the best way to relax!
I chilled out, relaxed and became totally stress-free! A calm, quiet and warm environment, just lying down and reading a book. That’s what I did and that’s what I loved. It is amazing how much you can relax at these resorts… Just as long as you don’t have to get up at 5am to reserve a seat for yourself (we actually had shifts to reserve seats before they were all out).

Choosing the swimming pool over the beach… Like I said before, reserving seats was a hassle and the beach nearby was almost empty. No sunsets, no nothing… I didn’t do it. Instead, I had chosen to stay near the pool, which I now regret. But hey, it was still nice and not sandy).
So, there you have it. I still dislike resorts because they make me feel like I’m in a prison. I’d rather be a budget traveler than live this luxurious life of protection. Sorry folks but that’s just who I am. Nevertheless the resorts I’ve been have given me a great experience which I shall always remember! But for these experiences, well, you don’t really need a resort for them now do you?
