It’s not just Lion Dancing in Chinatown!
Chinatowns! Most wonderful places of every city. The food is great, the art is beautiful and the people are friendly. Budget friendly market stalls everywhere and entertainment all around! For some reason, me and some fellow travelers even name our restaurants in all Chinatowns after the table design; Pink Cloths of Kuala Lumpur, Rain Barrels of Melaka.
After our explorations in Melaka, we settled down at a restaurant in Jonker Street and came to see a wonderful Chinatown sight. A huge stage had been set up and we were wondering what was going to happen. Were there Lion Dancers perhaps?
As the sun set – and it sets incredibly fast in the tropics – we stayed for a beer and watched Jonker Street fill with people. Seats across the stage would slowly fill with spectators and a group appeared.
The best part? The group was dressed in orange! As if the Dutch influences in Melaka weren’t enough. Obviously they were not related but the irony was fun!
Within less than a minute the people started dancing. It might not have been a lion dance, it looked totally like Line Dancing or something like that (my dancing knowledge is limited). But if you would expect country music or even Chinese music (the latter making total sense), than you will be disappointed.
What we were not disappointed with was the choice of music, which is modern day clubbing style sounds. We might just say “When I first came to Melaka, and I saw people dancing, I thought to myself, WTF?”
